Fun with my Mac

Tonight I worked on my Mac with my photo collection.  I have a number of tar archives of photos.  The only problem is that a number of the photos are duplicates. So I have been working on a script that walks a directory hierarchy and identifies files with

- same name but different content

- same content but different names

- same name and same content

It is making my head hurt.... I'm writing the script in PERL.

While trying to look for photos I made the mistake of "selecting all" in the Mac's finder and then double clicking on the selection.  BUZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!  I thought the first click would just select a single item... but no, I ended up with about a bazillion finder windows.  At first I thought my Mac had gone haywire.  But then I realized.... ugh.... operator error.  ;-)

I was surprised the Mac/Snow Leopard doesn't include the "md5sum" program.  I know that it does include the "md5" program that provides some of the functionality of md5sum.  I really like the "-c" or check option to md5sum.  This is a feature that md5 does not include.  I found an interesting article on building md5sum for the Mac.  So now I have it.  Building it requires you to have a compiler on your system.
